Opistophthalmus pallipes (Namaqua Burrowing Scorpion) from Koringberg

Koringberg is as far South as this species seems to go and the specimen from this area are very small compared to what one would find further North. There could be a number of factors that could have resulted in this population being so much smaller but the colder and wetter clime might be one of the main reasons.

Opistophthalmus pallipes (Namaqua Burrowing Scorpion) from Elands Bay

A common species throughout most of its range. They have an extensive distribution area; in the South they occur around the Cederberg and Piketberg mountains and then extends Northwards following the predominant mountain ranges of the area almost all the way to the border with Namibia. In the Tankwa Karoo and parts of the Groot Karoo a population can also be found that are much larger in size and more hairy as well that should be seen as a separate species.

Opistophthalmus aff pallipes from Tankwa Karoo.

An old photo from 2015 of one of the coolest specimen from the "pallipes complex" that I've seen. He was quite big, spanning my whole hand and had some extra long pincers, as shown in second photo.
